If you are in the market for an eBook reader but do not want to limit your choices to the Kindle and the Nook the Aluratek Libre eBook is an option to consider. At first sight it would be easy to qualify the Libre eBook as another clone of either the Kindle or the Nook, but closer inspection shows that this eBook reader is able to stand on it's own merits.
Aluratek Libre eBook Description
The first thing that is obvious when you look at the Aluratek Libre is that it is much smaller in size when compared to other options such as the Nook or the Kindle. However the screens of the Nook and Kindle are just 1 inch larger. The next thing that which sets the Libre apart is that unlike the industry standard the Libre does not use e-ink technology. Instead the Libre uses what Aluratek calls ePaper. A side by side comparison shows there is not too much difference between the screen with the ePaper being just as crisp and easy to read for long periods of time as the e-ink screen.
The Libre's display is actually reminiscent of the older PDA's, specifically the Palms. If you are going to be reading in low light situations the Libre might not be the best option as there is no back lighting for the screen, which means it is hard to read without ample light.
Below the screen in the bottom left hand corner are two buttons which are the next and previous page buttons. In the lower right hand side is a four way navigation button with other buttons such as font size and screen orientation. On the right side of the screen you will find 10 numbered buttons which are used to select the number of the book you want to read. The buttons also can be used to enter text using the mobile phone input format. On the left side of the screen is a spring loaded bar which can be pushed up to go to the previous page and pulled down to go to the next page. The reader also boasts an impressive 24 hours of non-stop reading.
On the top edge of the reader you will find the slot of the USB connector and the SD card while the headphone jack and the power button is located on the bottom of the reader. The reader comes with a 2GB card with 100 books preloaded which is a nice feature.
The Libre does not have any WiFi or 3G connectivity option which means you cannot download books directly to the reader. The only way to load new books on to it is to connect it to a computer and then add them on to the reader. The reader is able to support text files, epub, PDF and JPEGs. However sometimes the reader inexplicably freezes up while viewing JPEGs. You can add your own bookmarks to the books but are unable to annotate them like you can with other readers.
The Good
The reader is not too expensive and offers a convenient form factor and highly readable screen
The Bad
The reader lacks options such as WiFi and annotation which are available in other eBook readers.
The Verdict
If you are only looking to read books without viewing illustrations or making notes then the Libre is an option which will fulfill your needs without breaking the bank.
