Entourage eDGe
The Entourage eDGe goes way beyond being a simple eBook reader. The device features dual full size screens; one, the e-ink eReader screen while the other is a touch screen netbook powered by the Android operating system. The two screens are attached by a swivel in the middle which allows you to hold the Entourage eDGe in numerous ways.
Entourage eDGe Description
As would be expected of a device with two screens the Entourage eDGe is not a light or compact device in comparison to the other eReaders. The eDGe is 10.75 inches tall and 8.25 inches wide and is 1 inch thick when it is closed. In terms of weight the eDGe tops the scales at approximately 3lbs which means it is fairly heavy when compared to devices such as the Nook or the Kindle. The Entourage eDGe features a 9.7 inch e-ink screen with 8 shades of grey and a 10.1 inch android screen. A stylus is provided to write or use the android tablet however you can also use your finger. The overall casing makes the eDGe look quite bulky and reminiscent of hospital pads that doctors carry around.
The eDGe also provides a number of ports for various devices. There are two USB ports that can be used to attach external input devices such as a keyboard and mouse. There is also a micro USB slot provided to connect to a computer. Users can also access data stored on a Micro SD or SIM card by plugging them into the provided slots. Users can also take advantage of the three mega pixel camera located on top of the LCD screen. The speakers are located on the spine of the eDGe.
Entourage eDGe Usability
The eReader with its larger screen allows more text to be displayed, the page turns are as would be expected by most eReaders. Navigation buttons are provided to browse through the books, a nice feature to add would be the ability of changing pages by swiping your fingers across the screen.
Users are able to make notes on ebooks that can easily be transferred to the android screen so that they can be emailed or saved as a PDF document. The interaction between the two screens gives the Entourage eDGe a leg up on the competition. Users can easily highlight parts of the ebook to be displayed on the netbook side in full colour and better resolution. A useful journal application allows the user to quickly change between reading a book and taking notes. The e-ink display does have a lag when writing with the stylus, which reduces the speed at which one can enter information.
The netbook part of the eDGe is a standard Android device. Using WiFi connectivity you can browse the web or send email. Additional applications can be installed on the device to increase the functionality. The input is not extremely responsive and users might find themselves touching the screen multiple times before it works.
