Alex eReader

The Alex eReader features a unique design with two screens: the larger one being the display and the smaller one being the touch screen. With capability to play streaming videos and browse the internet, the Alex eReader is a product worth evaluating.

Alex eReader Description
The Alex eReader is quite tall with a height of 8.9 inches, width of 4.7 inches and thickness of only 0.4 inches. The Alex eReader features a dual screen design. The larger screen which measures 6 inches is an eink screen which displays the pages for the ebooks. The bottom screen which measures 3.5 inches is the touch interface. The ereader is based on the Android platform and is able to run some basic android applications as well.

The previous page and next page buttons are features on either side of the LCD screen along with a home and power button. A mic is located on top corner of the Alex eReader and the top edge has a mini USB port and headphone jack. The micro SD card slot is located on the back of the player.

One of the biggest drawbacks to the Alex eReader is that it is not associated with any major online bookstore like many of its competitors. Customers will have to purchase their own ebooks through services such as Google books or Alex's partner bookstores.

Alex eReader Usability
The eink display is as crisp as any of its competitions and also features a very impressive refresh rate. The interface is very similar to smart phones based on the Andriod platform. It comes with a few useful applications such as the Android browser, media player and POP email client.

Alex eReader While the responsive of the screen is quite good it can feel to be a bit unresponsive while browsing the internet. The Alex also has a YouTube player which takes advantage of the built in Wi-Fi capabilities.

While reading a book the top screen displays the pages while on the bottom screen the users are provided with a number of options such as:

Table of contents
Bookmarks
Notes
Text size
Search

A navigation bar is also provided which allows the user to scroll quickly through the book. A sync button is provided which allows the two screen to display the same content.

The battery life can last up to two weeks however that is only if you are using the eink screen primarily. If you use the android the battery life is reduced significantly.

The Good
The Alex eReader has a slim design which makes it comfortable to hold for a long duration. Features such as the built in Wi-Fi are a welcome addition. The Android platform allows for additional applications to be installed.

The Bad
The lack of integration with major book stores like Amazon.com or Barnes and Nobles hurt the rating of the player. What good is a ebook reader if it is a battle to get the ebooks loaded on to it. The price is also a draw back and would make many people think twice.

The Verdict
While the reader does have attractive features and looks, the lack of support from major book stores hurts it greatly. If you are in the market for an eReader the Alex eReader would be a good option to test, but should not be the only option you test.
