iPod Nano 6th Generation
The iPod has recently launched the 6th generation of the Nano, which boasts a few new features such as a touch screen and lets go of the iconic scroll wheel. Due to the removal of the scroll wheel the 6th generation Nano is much smaller than its predecessors and more on par with the size of the iPod shuffle.
IPod Nano Description
The main difference is the size of the 6th generation Nano, the player is almost half the size of the previous versions but still manages to keep a similarly sized screen. The weight of the Nano has also been reduced however this has come at the cost of no built in video camera and no external speakers.
The Nano also features 3 buttons on the top of the player. The larger button is used for power or sleep modes while the two smaller ones control the volume. This is a welcome addition as now you can easily adjust the volume with the dedicated buttons.
The front of the player is taken up completely by the screen which also acts as the main user interface. The device also features a clip on the back which can be used to fasten the Nano to clothing or bag straps.
iPod Nano Usability
The first thing that you notice about the new iPod Nano is that the menu looks more like a iPhone and less like an iPod. While the Nano does not use the iOS a number of the gestures would be familiar to users of the iPhone or the iPod Touch. The interface takes some getting used to mainly due to the small size of the screen which results in touching icons you did not mean to. Various applications are accessed on the home menu by swiping your finger across the screen. While the touch interface is easier and slightly more accurate than the scroll wheel one problem is that to use the sleep button you require two hands which can be annoying if you are on the move.
A number of the applications that were found on the previous generations have been dropped such as the contacts, notes, calendar and games. However the ability to listen to FM radio and podcast is still there. Another feature that will surely be missed from previous versions is the ability to add songs to a playlist on the go. With the new Nano the process can be cumbersome.
iPod Nano Audio Quality
The sound quality as compared to previous version is slightly improved however the advancements are not staggering. The bass feels fuller and the player is able to playback some of the highs that are cut by other players.
The Good
The reduction in size and the introduction of the touch screen interface really does bring something new to the Nano family which has not seen any major changes since it was first introduced.
The Bad
The removal of a number of features from the previous versions like video playback and recording, external speaker and other applications does mean this is one of the most stripped down Nano.
The Verdict
For iPod fans this new line of the Nano will be an attractive product. However due to the lack of features many people would be better served by waiting for the next generation to come out.
