Barnes and Noble's Nook
Screen

Barnes & Noble's Nook is another attractive addition to the world of the eBook readers. The Nook is a traditional eBook reader with many hi-fi facilities like Wi-Fi connection, EPub file format compatibility and colored touch screen interface.
Design and Features
Barnes & Noble's Nook has a very simple design. It weighs about 11.2 ounces and its dimensions are 4.9 in x 0.5 in x 7.7 in. We have a large traditional six inch screen. This screen has five colored icons at the bottom featuring various uses. We have page flip buttons on either side of the screen. Apart from this we do not have any controls on the body of the Nook except for the USB adaptor and the memory card slot at the sides.
All he actions are controlled by the touch screen interface. The five colored icons at the base of the touch screen named the daily, my library, shop, reading now and settings brings up various popup menus when touched. We have a home button in the middle which takes us back to the home screen when we are in some other screen.
The traditional 6-inch screen has 600x800 pixels resolution and has 16 grey scale shades. They use the e-ink technology giving a print like reading experience. This screen is the most important part of this eBook reader as we do not have any other physical controls.
This screen has advanced touch screen interface. Surprisingly, it does not attract lot of finger prints and is extremely responsive making the usage of this eBook reader pleasurable. This is the first screen which is partly monochrome and partly colored. The lower part of the screen using multicolor icons, add lot of glam to the whole eBook device.
Storage
The Nook is has 2 GB internal memory. We can expand the memory further using SD card slots up to 16 GB. More than 1500 eBooks could be stored in this device with the internal memory itself. Numerous amounts of music and image files also can be stored.
Support
PDF and EPub text file formats are supported. Nook does not support word documents or txt file formats. Image file formats like BMP, GIF, PNG and JPEG are supported. MP3 file formats are also supported. We have access to thousands of books from the Barnes & Noble's eBook store. We can purchase books from them and from free Google books store.
Barnes & Noble's eBook store allows us to borrow the books and periodicals for a period of 14 days to 21 days. Instead of purchasing the books, we can borrow them and read it within this period. After this the eBooks will automatically disappear from the device. This is much cheaper than buying the books. But this feature works only for a handful of titles.
Image and music
All the normal image file formats and music file formats are supported. Audio quality is not up to the mark. Images transferred from the computer or the camera look very good on this eBook reader with utmost sharpness and clarity.
Transferring data
Transferring data to the Nook requires certain supportive software's. We need them to purchase the books from the eBook stores. This software's are a bit hard to install and use. Once they are setup properly, data could be transferred in the normal way using the USB and the drag drop method.
Performance
The Nook has its own list of merits and demerits. It is the first eBook reader to use a colored screen interface. But using this colored LCD reduces the battery life extensively. The overall performance of the eBook reader is slow. It takes very long time to start up. Lack of proper accessories is another drawback. We don't even get a proper cover or useful USB cable along with the kit.
The Nook's much showcased book loaning feature has lot of limitations and the conversion software just doesn't work properly. Nook boasts of its fast 3G wireless connection and Wi-Fi access. But we cannot download books with it outside the country.
The Nook has massive internal memory of 2GB, which could be expanded further. The touch screen interface seems quite responsive and the user interface is easy to understand. We get access to wide variety of books, forums, blogs, magazines and periodicals. The text editing facilities are well developed. The overall performance of the Nook could be rated average.
Special features
The Nook has a built-in fully developed dictionary. We can use it at any time to find the meaning of the word or phrase we don't know. We can change the size and font of the text while we read easily. We can import images from our computer and set them as screensavers. This feature is found only in this eBook reader.
Verdict
Barnes & Noble's Nook has many desirable features like advanced file format support, wireless connection and colored touch screen interface. But sadly all of the promised features don't work as expected. Lot of features in this product needs immediate improvement. It is a product worth considering twice or even three times before purchasing.
