Cybook Gen3 eBook Reader
CyBook Gen3 is an ultra slim, portable electronic book from Bookeen. The Stylish design of the eBook and its capability to display text even under bright sunlight are attractive highlights.
Cybook Gen3 Design and Features
Its royal black finish and rounded ends make it look very stylish. This is a traditional 6 inch eBook reader with a very large screen and a single control pad on the bottom right corner. It weighs 6.13oz which will be equivalent to your mobile phones weight. The dimensions of the set are 4.7 x 7.4 x 0.3 inches. Its screen uses a very high e-ink technology called Vizplex.
It has a paper-like appearance which shows very clear text even in bright light. CyBook uses rechargeable built-in Li-Polymer battery (1000 mAh). Its battery life is amazing as it is designed to last for 8000 pages flip. Cybook does not consume power as long as the pages are not flipped. Hence the battery lasts for very long time. If you read an average of 80 pages a tday your battery will last for nearly two months.
It is very easy to hold and read. This provides a completely comfortable reading experience. The player has volume controls at the sides. The SD card slot and the USB connection port are found at the lower side. We also have a headphone jack there.
There is no touch screen facility in this reader. Hence all the activities are controlled by buttons. All together we have 11 control buttons serving various functions, all of them serving their purpose well.
Screen
It is carrying a digital library with you wherever you go. The screen uses special Vizplex technology and is designed with utmost care to give minimum strain to the eyes. This is a black and white screen with 600x800 pixels resolution and 166 dpi. It can show four shades of black. There is no backlight on the monitor. Text could be viewed in landscape and portrait mode.
It provides a real paper-like appearance with black text in white background. This high contrast appearance gives very little strain to our eyes. Hence the screen is quite responsive to numerous light conditions and provides clear text even in direct sunlight.
Cybook Gen3 Storage
CyBook has 64 MB internal flash memory which could be extended using SD card slots. 16 MB RAM and 8 MB ROM memory are present. This is one of the highest storage capacity provided in eBook market.
Cybook Gen3 Support
CyBook supports numerous file formats like PRC, HTML, Txt, PalmDoc and PDF. Size of the fonts in these files could be changed. But for PDF alone we can only zoom the text. Mobipocket eBook format is supported using which we can access all the copyrighted tiltles from famous publishers like Penguin, Random House, Simon & Schuster and Harlequin.
Cybook Gen3 Image and Music
Image file formats like JPEG, GIF and PNG are supported. Since it is a monochrome device images are not given much importance. But still we could not compalin much about the image rendering.
CyBook also supports MP3 music. There are suitable jacks for headsets at the sides. A 2.5 mm stereo headphone can be used. Well, who does not like to hear music while reading?
Transferring Data
Connect the CyBook to the computer using a general USB cable. All the necessary files and documents could be dragged and dropped into it. Windows, Linux and Mac OS are supported. We need not use any conversion software or strain ourselves with loads of download. Tranfer will be done easily.
Performance
It is undoubtedly one of the most amazing eBook reader ever created. Its perfomance is well above the mark in all categories. It is as thick as a magazine but weighs much low. It is very stlylish to carry it. The screen display is excellent. CyBook has amazing battery life and storage capacity.
Nearly all the common file formats used are supported. Images could be resized easily. However their rendering could be improved a bit. Music quality is also acceptable. The processor has 200MHZ speed. And hence it is q
The Verdict
CyBook Gen3 by Bookeen is a very versatile device with multi OS support and good processor speed. Advanced file format support like DRM could be added to enhance its usage further. The speciality of this eBook reader is its simplicity and standard perfomance.
If you are going to try an eBook for the first time CyBook Gen3 would be the best choice.
