A Flash in the iPad

Apple iPad The much awaited Apple iPad is going to be launched soon. As people wait curiously for its launch it has become evident that Adobe flash player is not going to be included in the Apple iPad. There are strong arguments going around stating it is not possible to deliver a proper browsing experience without the Adobe Flash player.

There are some people who strongly argue that iPad does use some certain features of uses certain features of Flash but is adamant to admit it. As we all know most of the actions in the websites like playing videos, running animations and bringing up a map are all done by Flash player.

We were amazed at first how it is possible to promise such a fully fledged browsing experience without the Flash player. But Apple has its own reasons to avoid flash and they promise there are better ways to use the internet without flash player.

Apples reasons for avoiding Flash Player
1. Most of the time Flash player causes the Operating System used in their devices such as iPhone Operating system to crash.

2. Frequent updates are needed to run it properly. This could possibly lead to security threats.

3. Flash plugins occupy too much memory space and tends to slow down the browsing speed.

Alternatives for Flash
Many alternatives for Flash player are present in the market such as Microsoft's Windows Media Player, Apple's QuickTime and RealNetworks' RealPlayer. But Flash player is better than them in some ways. For example Microsoft player does not support MAC users. But Flash player supports them. Apples quick time's plugins are much bulkier than Flash files.

Hence there was a necessity to use Flash definitely to play videos and animations. But now Apple had boldly declared it does not need Adobe Flash to provide the high quality browsing experience it is promising to its users. It quotes different Smartphones which are not using flash. But Apple iPad isn't a smartphone, it's a tablet computer and hence efficient browsing could not be compromised for minor reasons.

Apple itself tried to do this earlier with its iPhone and iPod touch. However they still used minor versions of flash. Now that they have decided to abandon Flash completely, there is no doubt we are going to face difficulties in watching Hulu videos, YouTube and in viewing some animations.

Apple iPad Efficient solution
As mentioned earlier using flash payer creates issues constantly so a wide segment of people agree with Apple on its decision. Even YouTube agreed to play videos after it has converted them into a non flash format. Many web developers have started to use HTML5 player as an alternative to Flashplayer.

However HTML5 player is in its initial stage of development now. Not all browsers support it. At the moment it is partly supported by FireFox, Safari and Chrome. HTML5 player is not supported by internet explorer.

Even if all the people start using a browser which supports HTML5 player, it would not be possible to convert all the videos on the net to a suitable format. HTML5 player itself toggles between two video file formats not being sure to use which one to use permanently. These file formats are h.264 and Theora.

Even if these file video file formats are supported we could not guarantee the quality of the videos to be the same as the ones using Flash player. However h.264 video file format has good quality. But the royalty cost on that is expensive. Theora file format is also not quite up to the mark.

At present Firefox browser supports Theora. Internet explorer does not support both the file formats. People are waiting eagerly for the latest Chrome Operating system to be released as it will apparently address many of these issues. Even so Chrome browser supports both Theora and h.264 video formats.

Conclusion
Over the years the conflict between Adobe and Apple has been growing constantly. Even now Adobe is appealing to its users to neglect iPad. On the other hand Apple claims they are trying to find an efficient solution for the never ending problems Flash player causs.

They claim they will sell nearly 2 to 3 million iPads this year. Apple argue that if it is able to satisfy these many people without Flash, then they would definitely do so with all other internet users. So we have to wait for the launch of the Apple iPad to judge if Apple is correct or Flash is, indeed, unavoidable.
