Kindle Library
We have many impressive features in Amazon Kindle. One such feature is the ability to hold a personal library. Once we buy a Kindle we get accesses to numerous books and magazines around the world. As we all know we can access nearly 420,000 books and many more New York Times best sellers. We spend ample time and money purchasing these books, storing them in the Kindle and reading them.
But what happens if we lose the Kindle or break it by mistake. We can make use of our own personal library. Whenever we buy a book or subscribe to a magazine Amazon allots certain space for us in its database and store all our purchases. If we tend to lose any of these contents which we have already paid for, by mistake we can immediately restore them from the Kindle personal library.
Say we broke a Kindle or lost it. We can buy a new Kindle and download all the books you paid for earlier without paying any extra money. The data could be retrieved easily from the Amazon database. This is similar to taking backup data in a computer. Only difference is that Amazon takes the backup for us.
Backup for our paid data
This backup could be stored separately as a copy in our computer or in any other memory device \. The advantages of owning a personal library are many. The books and periodicals can be re-downloaded at any time without any further cost. These data could be shared easily between various Kindles and computers too.
In addition to books and periodical subscriptions Amazon allows us to back up annotations too. However we cannot retrieve the personal documents, music files and the notes we make in the Kindle. This backup facility is strictly for the paid purchases we make.
Magazine and Periodicals subscription
It is a common practice to subscribe for magazines and news papers in your Kindle. But it is not possible to have all the contents in the backup. Amazon has recent issues of most of the magazines and newspapers. Older ones are deleted automatically after some time to store new data. Hence very old data could not be retrieved easily.
Normally seven issues of any periodical or a magazine is stored in a Kindle. We get an exclamation mark near the item before a few days of deletion.
However if you want to have a particular issue of a news paper or a periodical permanently mark them as important following these steps.
Go to the magazine issue which you want to store permanently
Select "Keep This Issue" from the menu and press "keep" on the left side of the home screen.
Exceptions
This is the normal procedure to maintain a personal library. But there are exceptions. There are times when the requested content may not be available in Kindle library. This might be due to certain issues with the publisher. But the copy in your Kindle is unaffected.
Advantages of maintaining and owning library
The main advantage is that we can access it at any time and any place.
The second main advantage is we need not pay money extra to use this facility.
We need not allocate huge memory space on our computer or other devices for storing huge amount of data.
The backup library is stored online and you can use it and re-download from it at any part of the world.
It is not necessary that you use a Kindle alone to avail these services. This library can be accessed if you have an iPhone and a Kindle for iPhone application.
Conclusion
Whenever we buy a book we keep it is a shelf after reading it. We can take the book and read it even after many years. Amazon applies the same concept in creating a separate library for each of its users. Though Kindle is a very durable device, it is not rare that it gets damaged.
It is very thoughtful of Amazon to provide such a good and useful backup plan. This is a boon to users who switch to higher versions of Kindle. Once we purchase a book it gets stored on our space and stays there forever. It is up to us to re access it further.
