Features Missing in iPad
Apple iPad is showcased as the most brilliant tablet computer ever created with numerous facilities like internet, audio support, video playback, eBooks, Wi-Fi connection and thousands of dedicated applications built specially for iPad.
So what else could a person expect from a 10 inch device. It seems to satisfy users from all classes starting from students to business people. That's the speciality of Apple iPad. We can write an entire volume on its amazing features, as well as its missing features too.
On the first sight Apple iPad seems flawless with all the necessary facilities a person could think of. But digging deeper we can see it lacks some of the real basic necessary features. To name a few.
1. There is no USB port
2. SD card slot is missing in one model
3. Flash player is not supported
4. Multi-tasking is not allowed
5. No camera
6. Drag and Drop file functionality is missing
7. No GPS
8. 1080p playback is not delivered.
Lack of USB port
Apple minimised the control buttons stating it is fully touchscreen. But along with the controls Apple took off the USB port. A 30-pin connector is found on the rear side of iPad instead of a usual USB Port. Now we have to connect an iPad Camera connection kit, an accessory which we should pay separately to use a USB port. We can use this to transfer contents from our camera through USB cable. But no one is sure if it is possible to use the same port to connect to the PC and other USB devices like keyboard. Who knows there might be some compatability issues and we might need to download another new sofware for that.
SD card slot is missing
The model which supports 3G has an SD card slot. But that will be widely available in Europe. The model marketed frequently in US does not have an SD card slot. But it comes with 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB memory capacity. So, since there is no SD card slot, we have to delete the existing contents if that space is fully used.
Again the iPad Camera connection kit could be used to transfer contens from a cameras SD card slot. But again no one is quite sure whether the same port could be used to expand the 16 GB and 32 GB memory further using SD card slots. Nothing is mentioned about this in the any of Apples websites or press releases.
Flash player missing.
Flash player is replaced by HTML5 player to play online vedios. But HTML5 player is in its beginning stage and not all videos could be played using it. It is the general talk in industry that Hulu vidoes won't support HTML5 player and hence we will not be able to view those videos in the Apple iPad.
One good news item is that YouTube has announced all its videos are viewable with HTML5 player also. But still the absence of Flash player will leave a lot of unloaded videos while we browse using iPad.
Multi-tasking is not supported
The current version of iPhone OS 3.2 does not support multitaksing. We need to do one task at a time. We could not hear music and check our emails. However Apple is trying its level best to incorporate multi-tasking before the release of the iPad so we wait with baited breath for that one.
No Camera
Camera facility is completely omitted from iPad. And this puts an end to numerous features like taking pictures and loading them immediately in Facebook or twitter, video conferencing and video chats for example. Even the cheapest mobile phones come with a VGA camera capable of taking vidoes. But Apples most advanced device completely shuts down the still image and video shooting options.
Drag and Drop file functionality is missing
There is no USB port. We cannot connect iPad and a system directly. So Apple, evidently dod not think of file drag and drop functionality at all. How do we transfer contents then? We have to sychronize our iPad with one computer as a primary content management system.
Files could be transferred from that computer alone after some head spinning registration process. So there is no way use the facility? Unfortunately Apple did not consider including that function so there is no drag and drop option.
No GPS
The model with 3G support has partial GPS connection. But it will work only if you pay separately for the mobile data connection. But this GPS connection is very accurate but again it will not work on dead zones. The other model without 3G does not support GPS at all. But it uses google services to assist you to get the map of the area you choose. But its functions are also limited.
No 1080p Playback
You will not be able to play 1080p vidoe files partly because of the lack of a proper player and partly because they need a proper conversion software which is no available until now. This is only a minor fault considering the absence of main feature like camera.
Conclusion
These are the some of the major features missing in iPad now. Still there are some unlisted ones line lack of proper HDMI outputs and more features will be added to this list after the release of the device. Let's hope atleast a few drawbacks like multi-taskig are fixed before the release of Apple iPad.
