Will Notion Ink Adam be a Worthy Competitor to iPad?
Apple iPad has many impressive features and aims in becoming a big success. Ever since its introduction screening, there were numerous debates and discussions on the quality and features of the device. As we wait for its release eagerly many forums and discussions have already begun to search a proper match for the device.
Surprisingly Notion Ink Adam which is still under production is considered to be the only match for iPad. We can expect the release of Notion Ink Adam by June or July. But the expectations set on this product are already sky high. Critics have already started calling it iPad killer. Let us see some impressive features about Notion Ink Adam.
Special features in Notion Ink Adam
Initial reports state that Notion Ink Adam will be priced about $327 to $800. This tablet will be officially released in the 2010 Mobile World Congress at Barcelona. Both the products are yet to be released but Adam seems to have a few more attractive features than iPad.
Adam will feature a 10 inch trans-reflective LCD screen with 1024x600 resolutions. The special PixelQi screen will enable the users to view its contents in color and in black and white mode. As both these devices will be doubling as an eBook reader also there is lot of advantages with the monochrome mode.
It will provide a reading experience similar to reading a normal newspaper. Notion ink Adam offers 16 hours of web browsing and 160 hours of normal usage with backlight off. It also uses Firefox and chrome web browsers.
Notion Ink Adam runs using dual-core ARM Cortex A9 CPUs. It also has Nvidia Tegra 2 System-on-a-Chip which consumes very little power enhancing the battery usage to a great level. This chip runs at 1GHZ speed. Adam supports multiple operating systems like Android, Ubunty and Chromium. Adam also supports Adobe Flash player 10.1 and is capable of multitasking.
Adam features a 3 megapixels autofocus camera and uses Wi-Fi, 3G and Bluetooth for wireless connection. It also has some special features like ambient light sensor, RF sensor, Assisted-GPS, proximity sensor, accelerometer and touchpad. Adam uses SD card slot for storage and also has a HDMI port and three USB ports.
Drawbacks of iPad compared to Notion Ink Adam
iPad costs more than Notion Ink Adam. Its initial price itself is $499. iPad has already earned a bad reputation as many people feel proper web browsing experience is not possible without good flash player support.
iPad has a 9.7 inch IPS LCD screen with special IPS technology. But it will not display the contents in monochrome mode. This is a definite drawback when we read huge books using iPad. iPad uses Apple's A4 SoC silicon chip which is also capable of running at 1 GHz speed, same as in Adam.
Since this chip consumes more power than the one in Adam tablet the battery life of iPad will last as long as 10 hours on internet and 8 hours if videos are watched. This is no match to the excellent battery life of Adam. Apple iPad supports only Safari browser while Adam supports multiple browsers. In the same way iPad used iPhone OS 3.2 while Adam supports multiple OS.
iPad does not use flash player and does not support multitasking. It does not have and inbuilt camera and the features related to that. On the other hand Adam supports the latest flash player, has an inbuilt camera with advanced facilities like autofocus and supports multitasking as well.
When it comes to storage iPad still sticks with old SSD options and does not features any ports on its body including the USB port. Adam tablet is much ahead of iPads design in this factor also.
Conclusion
Lack of flash player support, multitasking, camera and necessary ports like USB were the iPad's main drawbacks. Notion Ink Adam was smart enough to create a tablet with all these features and market it in a price tag less than iPad.
As of now we do not know the quality of all the showcased features in both the devices. But experts feel Apple should address a few noteworthy flaws immediately for the iPad to stay in the market for long years and compete effectively with other players.
