Pandigital Novel
Coming in with a price of under $200 the Pandigital Novel is an e-book reader for those that are price conscious. The reader offers a 7 inch screen which is adequate size for reading book while on the move.
The Pandigital novel goes beyond a simple e-book reader. The built in Wi-Fi capabilities allows the user to connect to the internet and browse websites. Integration with the Banes & Nobel store also allows for easy downloads of new books.
Pandigital Novel Description
The majority of the Pandigital's real estate is taken up by the 7 inch touch screen which also double as the primary input device and has an onscreen keyboard for when input in required. The e-reader does feature a power button along with volume controls. The Pandigital features a speaker on the back of the player, which is loud enough for personal use however users would want to carry a pair of headphones in crowded or noisy environments.
The player's dimensions are 5.5 x 7.5 x .5 inches and it weighs a mere 19oz which makes it much more convenient to hold than the iPad. Pandigial has included 1GB of onboard storage and also provide a SD slot to expand the memory up to 32GBs.
A USB port and headphone jack is also provided on the player. The reader features a stripped down version of the Android platform and the company provides regular fire ware updates to enhance the usability of the reader. It is available in either black or white.
Pandigital Novel Usability
While the size and dimensions of the player make it very convenient to hold and use, however the software of the player can let users down. The software can be unresponsive at times and in order to turn the page you might need multiple tries before getting it. Even while browsing the touch interface can be less than perfect. Instead of moving back and forth through web pages, hand gestures can be mistaken for selection. The lack of tactile forward and back buttons is sorely missed. The user interface is also not very intuitive and could be improved upon.
The integration with the Barnes and Nobel online book store is quite impressive. Users can quickly and easily log on to the website and preview and download new books to their readers. Some other applications also come loaded on the device such as the Facebook application and stock and weather applications. However like browsing the book when you use the applications they can seem sluggish while starting up and performing basic operations.
The reader can last up to 10 hours when it is being used for reading and about 5.5 hours for video playback which is quite impressive.
The Good
Costing under $200 this is a cheap alternative to some of the more pricey options. The form factor and the weight of the reader means it is quite easy and can be held for a long while as you read. Built in WiFi capabilities allow browsing which is always a plus.
The Bad
The Pandigital Novel's processor lets it down, the response from the reader is quite sluggish and can be frustrating at times. The viewing angle for anything apart from text is very narrow.
The Verdict
If you are looking for something that can be used to simply read book then the Pandigital Novel would be a good option. However if you want a reader which is responsive like the iPad you will be disappointed with the performance of the Pandigital Novel.
Cost: $150 - 180
