Samsung U5
The Samsung is a mp3 player in the under $50 range which provides quite a few useful tools and features. The U5 is shaped more like a USB stick and with the built in USB connector makes it resemble one even more.
While the player does not support video playback like many other players on the market, with its combination of price and usability, the Samsung U5 is still a player woth considering.
Samsung U5 Description
The Samsung U5 measures 4.35 inches in height, 2.61 inches tall and only 1.5 inches deep. Similar to a USB stick the top part of the player is a cover that when removed exposes a USB connector. This is a very useful addition and makes the Samsung U5 stand out from many of the other mp3 players in the market. Using the Built in USB connector, files and music can be added to the player from any device at any time without the need for an extra cable. An added advantage is that the player is also able to recharge while plugged into a USB slot, this also eliminates the need for an extra charger.
The one thing that the U5 does not have is a full fledged screen, the player has a 1 inch black and white screen which displays information such as battery power and track being played. The screen is located in the center of the player on the front panel. On the right side of the screen you will find a 4 way direction button which is used to navigate around the player. There is no space for adding additional memory to the player and users are limited to the 2GB of space that is provided. The player does offer around 20 hours of audio playback on a single charge which is quite impressive.
An addition that could be consdiered cute or annoying according to the state of ones liver is what Samsung calls Popcon. This is a little animated character that pops up on the player. Users have a choice of 11 characters to pick from. The animated popcon shows up when the player is booted or when no album art is available.
Samsung U5 Audio Performance
For its price the Samsung U5 has above average audio quality. The various tones can be heard and if you invest in a decent pair of headphones the quality becomes much better. The player also features a built in EQ with multiple preset settings along with one that can be customized based on your listening preferences. The U5 also features a built in FM radio to offer a break from your MP3 collection. One let down with the player is that it offers very limited support for different file formats. The U5 is only able to play the following files MP3, WMA, OGG and FLAC.
Samsung U5 Additional Features
The U5 does not boast a range of add ons or applications such as the iPod family or other costly players. It does however feature a built in mic for voice and radio recording. The player also has a fitness function, but in reality it is not very useful. It is basically just a metronome to keep you in time. If you want a proper fitness tracker you would be better suited going with the iPod and Nike fitness options.
The Good
Good battery life combined with above average audio quality and a built in USB connector make the U5 a good over all package.
The Bad
The limited file support and lack of video playback capability put the U5 at a disadvantage when it comes to usability and features.
The Verdict
If you are looking for a small and cheap portable music solution that also allows you to take voice notes, the U5 is a good option. If you want your mp3 player to do more than that you probably should look elsewhere.
