SONY Reader Daily Edition PRS-900
Sony Reader Daily Edition PRS-900 is an excellent eBook reader from Sony with touch screen interface, elegant slim design and built-in wireless 3G service.
Design and Features
Sony PRS-900 design looks so elegant and slim and is so weightless to carry, in spite of its wide body. It has a 7.1 inch screen similar to the screen in Kindle. The screen dominates most part of the front surface. This eBook reader has minimum controls as most of the actions are done through the touch screen interface.
Below the screen we have five buttons for previous, back, home, zoom and options. On the rear end we have the power jack, USB port, headphone jack and the memory card slot. There are very few physical controls in the eBook reader and the design is very chic and simple.
The touch screen interface is quite responsive. It brings up the menus and controls in proper order even at the slightest tap. Apart from this, the manual buttons give access to nearly all the controls, even though there are only five buttons present.
Screen
We have a huge 7.1-inch screen with 1,024 x 600-pixel resolution and 16 levels of grayscale. Since the screen is large, it displays more line of texts. The background of the screen is slightly darker than the text displayed, most of the time. It gives good contrast and help in making the reading experience better.
Though we used the screen very often, it did not show visible finger prints or scratches. The touch screen interface is designed to be very responsive. The special e-ink technology does its part in reducing the power consumption.
Storage
Sony PRS-900 has 64 MB internal memory. Apart from this we have a special SD memory card slot and memory stick pro Duo slot for storage. Immense amount of data can be stored with this vast memory. Image and music file formats are also supported by this eBook reader.
Although hese files will occupy considerable amount of space in our memory, we can still we can store hundreds of full novels in the eBook reader. One of the main highlights of this eBook reader is its vast storage facility, one of best in the market.
Support
Extensive file format support is the reader's other special feature. All major file formats like text, RTF, Word, EPUB files, and PDF's are supported. MP3 and AAC audio file formats are also supported. JPEG, BMP, PNG, and GIF image files are also supported. This eBook reader is compatible with both windows and MAC systems.
Sony gives access to numerous free classic Google Books. We can buy the bestselling books from the Sony library for $9.99 just as in Kindle. Updated Sony's eBook Library software also does its share, in increasing the number of books offered for the customer. As in all other Sony readers, content from many local libraries and small eBook stores are also listed.
Image and Music
JPEG images, MP3 music files and ACC audio files are supported. Image rendering is absolutely fine as the screen displays 16 shades of grey. Since we have immense storage space, we can store lot of music files. Audio books could be heard through a built in speaker and the sound quality is very good.
Transferring data
We can transfer the data in the usual drag and drop format by connecting the USB cable to the computer. First we should install the Sony software. Connect the computer with the eBook, purchase the book and then drag and drop it into the eBook reader.
Performance
Sony PRS-900 is a high end eBook reader, with many advanced features. It is a bit too technical for common people. The touch screen interface works absolutely fine. The battery life is quite good as in most of the Sony readers. The screen has good image rendering techniques and wonderful resolution.
We have extensive support for image and music files. We have all the basic text editing facilities like changing font, changing color, changing size of the text and good annotation and note making options. We have support to full dictionary, using which we can find out the meaning of any word at any point of time.
The price of the reader is slightly high compared to other eBook readers. But considering its amazing features, it is a reader worth its cost. The overall performance of the reader is quite fast. We do not have any features which need major improvement. Only a handful of magazines and periodicals could be accessed. But we can access these from the links to the local libraries. So this minor fault does not matter much.
Special features
This is the first eBook reader to use 3G wireless connection. Books could be purchased easily and quickly through this technology. Usage of 3G enables many users to use the eBook reader in different countries also.
Verdict
Sony PRS-900 is an excellent eBook reader with 3G wireless connection, extensive file format support and fast performance. Though it is bit costly, advanced touch screen features and extensive access to thousands of books from Sony library, it is one of the best on the market and makes the eBook reader well worth the price.
