SONY Reader Pocket Edition PRS-300

Sony Reader Pocket edition PRS-300 is a compact slim eBook reader with decent battery life. It has various facilities like EPub compatibility and comes in very affordable cost.

Design and Features
This eBook reader weighs less than half a pound and has slim and neat design. We have a 5 inch monitor dominating the main screen. Below this we have a five way directional pad. This is used to browse between the titles and select them. We have four buttons placed on either side of this pad for home, bookmark and zoom.

The buttons are arranged with enough space in between them making their usage easy. We have ten buttons on the right side of the screen. They help in turning the pages, flipping through text, moving back and forth in a document, scrolling and in navigating between different screens.

We have a power adaptor at the sides. But we do not have any memory card slots or headphone jacks. We do not have any volume rockers or any other extra controls on the side except for the USB port. It is a simple neat design with a small screen and ten buttons on the right side.

Screen
Sony PRS-300’s screen is smaller than the usual six inch screen. But it does not make much difference in reading. The screen has 800 x 600 pixels resolution and displays eight levels of grayscale.

This reader use advanced e-ink technology giving a print like experience while we read. This technology is very soothing to eyes when we use the eBook reader for long hours. It also consumes very less power and increases the page turn and refreshing time to a certain level.

Storage
Sony PRS-300 is a basic eBook reader aimed in providing good reading experience to the readers. Hence all the other additional features are not emphasized much. We do not have expandable memory card slots.

The reader comes with 512 MB internal memory and is capable of holding 350 books at a time. We have to survive with this limited memory space. There is no way of increasing it. If the reader's memory is full we should delete the existing contents to load new data.

Support
Sony PRS-300 supports wide range of file formats like text, RTF, Word, BBeB Book files, EPUB files, and PDF's. It is even capable of reading encrypted Sony eBooks. Apart from this wide range of file support the reader has direct access to Sony's eBook Library software. The eBook reader is compatible with both windows PC and MAC.

Using this reader can download books from Sony's vast collection and avail new books at $9.99 range just as in Kindle. Readers can also check the books from local libraries and Google books. More than a million books are available for the users choice here along with numerous sites, and blogs.

Image and music
Sony PRS-300 does not support JPEG image display or MP3 file formats. Hence we cannot see images or hear audio books or music.

Transferring data
Data could be transferred easily to and from the PC by connecting the eBook reader with a USB cable. We need not use any major conversion software for the process or go through complex registration process as in Kindle.

Performance
The performance of Sony PRS-300 is fairly good when it comes to eBook reading. It has an impressive battery life which lasts for more than 7000 page flips. Though the screen is very small it has good resolution and provides a pleasurable reading experience.

There is no support for JPEG files. Lack of images is a drawback, but it is compensated by good text editing options. We can resize the text as we read, change the font, add bookmarks and notes as and when needed. This reader is very easy to control. The ten buttons on the right side prove very useful to almost any activity done using the eBook reader.

Sony PRS-300 comes in an affordable price tag. However the reader does not have a built-in AC adaptor. We have to pay extra for it. The EPub file compatibility presents the users with millions of Google books and link the users to numerous local libraries. Sony's special updated version of eBook library software is also a worthy addition. The overall performance of the reader is fairly good.

Special features
Great file compatibility is the major special feature of the Sony PRS-300 eBook reader. Many major eBook readers with lot of extra facilities will lack behind when it come to modern file format supports. Sony PRS-300 addresses that problem beautifully. Using its wide file format support we can download and purchase items online from Sony or from any other eBook store. There is no indirect restriction of brand usage.

Verdict
Sony PRS-300 is a small, basic eBook reader which gives great reading experience and also provides numerous options to buy books. Limited storage and lack of other features like music file support is a drawback. But still if we consider the price tag, it is an adorable eBook reader.
